Consuming too much fluid can be one cause. Although usually excess fluids are excreted in urine and through the skin, if there is too much, it stays within the body and it may cause swelling.
Beware of work where you spend extended periods in the same posture! Work where you are in the same posture for extended periods, whether it is standing or sitting for the whole time, makes you prone to swelling since the body fluids accumulate in the lower half of your body due to gravity.
Swelling of the lower legs and feet may occur with poor blood circulation in the lower legs. When you walk, the calf muscle pump is activated and keeps the blood circulating back the heart. This circulation prevents the blood from stagnating in the lower legs and feet, which can cause swelling.
The poor blood circulation will cause the veins to become congested. The congested veins cause an increased pressure in the small capillary blood vessels of the lower leg. The small capillary blood vessels start to leak and an edema, (accumulation of fluid from the blood) is formed.
Also, the reason why women more than men experience swelling is because the leg’s muscular strength is weaker and there is not enough muscle pumping action making the legs more prone to accumulate blood. Moreover, women are also prone to swelling because an agent in the female hormone that expands the blood vessel.
